Sun Life brings light to Lawis Elementary School in Balasan

AS part of its 120th anniversary in the Philippines, Sun Life Financial
builds 120 classrooms in various parts of the country.
On July 9, Sun Life’s bright rays shone upon Lawis Elementary School in Balasan town in Northern Iloilo as they helped build the four-classroom building that the company donated to the said school.

In
partnership with Children’s Hour Philippines, Inc., a fund raising, fund
giving, and friends raising organization that supports projects in education,
health and nutrition, and child welfare and development for disadvantaged
Filipino children, the Project 120 Classrooms is Sun Life’s way of giving back
to the country as they reach out the far-flung communities devastated by
typhoon “Yolanda” (International name: Haiyan).

According
to Children’s Hour Philippines, Inc. executive director Geeneth Garcia, Iloilo
is the third leg of the project as they have already turned over classroom
buildings to Bohol in January and Cebu in June. They hope to officially turn
over the classroom buildings in Iloilo by September as Sun Life targets to
build a total of 17 classrooms in five schools located in the towns of Balasan,
Batad, San Dionisio, and Estancia.

She
added that Children’s Hour Philippines, Inc. will be also donating computer
sets, school kits and medical equipment to the school beneficiaries.

“This
project signifies the collaboration and the success that happens when the
community, the government and the private sector work together to bring about
positive change,” Garcia noted.

On
his part, Sun Life Financial Asia president Kevin Strain said that the Project
120 Classrooms addresses the importance of education in nation building and as
they make it as an integral part of their 120th anniversary in the
Philippines, the said classrooms will part of their history.
Meanwhile,
Sun Life Financial Philippines President and CEO Riza Mantaring mentioned that
the project is part of their vision of protecting the future of the Filipinos
and build a brighter future for everyone.

Being
a believer of the value of education, she advised the pupils to study well for
them to become successful in the future.
“This
is a great opportunity for the children and this a relief for them to have a
classroom that they deserve and they need. Make good use of the classroom by
studying well so that you can have a bright future,” she quoted.

Lawis Elementary School principal Renato Alavaren is very thankful for the priceless deed of Sun Life to the school. He said that more than providing the pupils with a conducive learning edifice, the company has also gave life and inspiration to them as well as to the teachers and all of the residents of the barangay.
The
donated four-classroom building will be utilized as classrooms of the Kinder
and Grades 1 to 3 pupils, he said.

Department
of Education (DepEd) Partnerships and External Linkages Undersecretary Mario
Deriquito who graced the event also thanked Sun Life for choosing to support
education and for providing nice and durable classrooms provide our children
safe and conducive learning environment and teacher better work places.
“One
of the priorities of this administration is to ensure that all children are in
school and nice classrooms are very effective way to entice children to go back
to school,” noted.
Project
120 Classrooms is seen to be finished within three to four years. As of June,
Sun Life has already turned over 33 classrooms in Bohol and Cebu. The company
is also looking other sites such as Leyte and Tacloban.
