SM Foundation inks MOA with JASAC

WITH the aim of alleviating the lives of the survivors of typhoon “Yolanda” (International name: Haiyan) in the town of Concepcion in Northern Iloilo, SM Foundation, Inc. inked a three-year memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action Center, Inc. (JASAC) on July 14.

SM Foundation, Inc. built an “SM Cares Village” in Barangay Bakhawan Sur, Concepcion for those who lost their homes during the onslaught of the said typhoon.

The village is composed of 200 house units measuring 23 square meters with toilet and bath and provision for second floor.

According to SM Prime Holdings, Inc. Vice President Maria Eloisa Fernan, each house unit costs P250,000. Once finished, the community will have cemented roads, proper drainage system, water supply and electricity to make it more liveable and accessible.

In addition, a community center and a basketball court will be also built that will serve as venues for various community activities.

SM Foundation, Inc. will be also establishing a six-classroom two-storey building in the said barangay and will be also offering scholarship grants to deserving school children.

“We are bringing the change holistically as we build communities and develop people,” said Fernan.

Meanwhile, JASAC will be in-charged for soft the components of the project such as the selection process of the beneficiaries and in helping them adjust to their new living condition.

According to JASAC director Msgr. Meliton Oso, they will prioritize those who are most in need and least served; whose houses were totally damaged by typhoon “Yolanda”; families with children, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and elderlies.

JASAC will be also integrating development plans for livelihood, water, sanitation and health, and disaster risk reduction and ecosystems.

At present, Oso said that they have already validated 151 beneficiaries and they hope to complete the list of 200 beneficiaries before they officially turn over the house units on August 4.

Aside from Concepcion, SM Foundation, Inc. have also established “SM Cares Villages” in Bogo, Cebu with 200 units which were turned over last November; in Tacloban with 400 units which will be turned over on the latter part of August; and in Ormoc with 200 units which is scheduled for turn-over on September.
