AS part of its tradition, SM City Iloilo features the various homegrown products of Iloilo as its way of celebration of the Philippine Independence Day.

While all eyes are on Iloilo’s hosting of the 117th Philippine Independence Day rites, SM City Iloilo puts Guimbal’s famous delicacy called “bocarillo” on the centerstage as they unveiled a giant version of it on June 11.

The giant bocarillo which formed a round Philippine flag icon was made of more than 9,000 pieces displayed in platform measuring 12 feet by 12 feet. The bocarillo used on the said display were cooked with two sacks of sugar and took two days for it to be done.

Bocarillo is a specialty delicacy of Guimbal made from strips of coconut meat cooked with sugar.
The unveiling of the giant bocarillo was led by Guimbal’s Mayor Christine Garin, Vice Mayor Mary Ann Suyao-Lujan, SB Member Christy Love Custodio-Margarico, and SM City Iloilo Asst. Mall Manager Jasmine Maquiling.

In her speech, Mayor Garin invited the mall goers to visit their municipality and enjoy its other delicacies and tourism offerings just like the watchtower and its beautiful beaches.

Meanwhile, Guimbal Performing Arts and Cultural Group added color to the event as they gave the audience a glimpse of the town’s Bantayan Festival through their spectacular performance.

The giant bocarillo was distributed to the mall shoppers for free for them to taste the proud product of Guimbal.

Last year, SM City Iloilo featured a giant cake made by local pastry shop, Cakestop.
