‘Fiestas in the City’ highlights WV’s tourism offerings

THE month of May has been tagged as the “Fiesta Month” as it is on this time of the
year when most barrio fiestas are being held.

City Iloilo brings the barrio fiesta feel in the city by staging the annual
“Fiestas in the City”.
Now
on its 13th year, “Fiestas in the City” has gone bigger as it has
now become a region-wide event participated by the different provinces of the
region namely, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.

City Iloilo mall manager Engr. Gilbert Domingo said that “Fiestas in the City:
serves as thleir commitment in promoting the beauty and culture of Western
Visayas.
He
added that the flagship project of the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 6,
“Experience Western Visayas First” encapsulates the very essence of the said
event.
“It
is through love and appreciation of our region first before we can introduce it
to the rest of the country and the world. I hope that this weeklong activity
will rekindle our interest to visit, appreciate and love our own Western
Visayas through the dance, the song and the products and everything that this
beautiful region has to offer,” he stressed.

Meanwhile,
Iloilo City tourism officer Ben Jimena said that tourism is more that the
attractions that a certain place have. It is also about the people, the
products and the place itself.
“Fiestas
in the City” also makes people aware that fiesta is important. Jimena explained
that Fiesta a keyword for tourism as it stands for Fun; Infrastructures;
Engaging hosts; Safe and Secured Place, Track record in being hospitable; warm
and friendly; and Accessible to visitors.
He
is also happy to note that tourism industry in on the trend as the government
has learned the importance and significance of tourism as an industry.
“Fiestas
in the City” is a week-long celebration of culture, products and
attractions of the provinces of Western Visayas.
Each
province will be highlighted everyday as they will be given the spotlight to
showcase their tourism offerings. It was kicked off by Aklan Day on May 19;
Negros Occidental and Bacolod City Day on May 20; Capiz Day on May 21; Iloilo
Province and Iloilo City Day on May 22; and Antique Day and Guimaras Day on May
23 at 2 pm and 4 pm, respectively.
“Fiestas
in the City” will be capped by a parade of festival queens of the region
through a Sagala on May 23.
A
Destination and Booth and Trade Fair which showcases the various products and
attractions that could be found in each region is also open from May 18 to 24.
