5 Cybersecurity Tips You Should Always Remember
In this era of digitalization, it is vital that we know how to protect our privacy and secure our personal information. As a micro-influencer, digital media plays an integral part of my daily life not only in terms of brand promotions but also in some personal transactions such as banking and communications.
With this, there is a need for every digital media user to protect themselves and identify cybersecurity threats.
To give you some important points to remember, here are five cybersecurity tips that you can do.
1. USE A STRONG PASSWORD
When choosing your password for your social media accounts, email, or online bank log-ins, do not use the obvious one such as your birthday, nickname, partner's name, or name of your pet. Use a stronger password that no one could ever guess, but you can easily remember. Aside from that, changing your password regularly is also advised to keep your account safe from hackers. Having two-factor or multi-factor authentication is also a good idea for you to be notified if someone attempts to log in to your account.
2. BE MINDFUL ABOUT PHISHING SCAMS
Phishing is a type of scam wherein the attacker pretends to be someone legitimate and gets your personal information, login credentials, and sometimes, credit card numbers. These usually come in the form of emails and private messages on social media. The best way to avoid phishing is by not opening emails from people you do not know, learning how to identify links that are safe and which are not, and being mindful about clicking links even if it comes from your friends.
3. DO NOT USE PUBLIC WIFI
Connecting to free public wifi can be a disadvantage sometimes. If you notice, most of the public wifi requires you to sign up in order to access their free internet service and that can already be a threat to cyberscurity. To protect your data, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to ensure that the traffic between your device and the server is encrypted.
4. ALWAYS UPDATE YOUR SOFTWARE
We might take this usually for granted unless required, but updating your software is also a way of protecting you against threats of cybersecurity. Outdated software can be easily patched by ransomware and gives hackers the chance to access your device. In order to avoid this, turn on your device's automatic system updates, use automatic security updates on your desktop and web browser, and keep your plug-ins and applications up to date.
5. BACK UP YOUR DATA
This is very important, especially if you have treasured files on your device. Backing up your data will not only save you from losing all your files but can also protect you against the threats of cybersecurity. Ransomware and malware can be eliminated by restoring data. If you have backed up your data, there is no need for you to worry about erasing your system.
