SM’s matriarch Felicidad T. Sy through her very own foundation officially turned over Chapel of Mary the Queen to Iloilo River Plains Subdivision in Lanit here on June 27.

Located in a 1,500 square meters property, the P6.1 million chapel measures 326 square meters and has a modern architectural design.

More than a structure, the Chapel of Mary the Queen symbolizes hope to the residents of the said community who were previously squatting along the Iloilo River.

Present during the turn over ceremony were SM Investments Corporation (SMIC) Vice Chairperson Teresita Sy-Coson, Sen. Franklin Drilon, Cong. Arcadio Gorriceta, Cong. Jerry P. Treñas, Iloilo City vice mayor Joe Espinosa III and Ilonggo businessman Alfonso Tan, among others. Archbishop Angel Lagdameo also graced the event and led the very first mass held in the chapel.

Sen. Franklin Drilon is thankful to Felicidad T. Sy Foundation for funding the establishment of the chapel as it will benefit the residents of the subdivision as they work on improving the surrounding and continue looking at the basic needs of the people.

He added that it will serve the spiritual needs of the community knowing that Ilonggos are religious individuals.

Moreover, the chapel is also in line with the city government’s thrust in making Iloilo River Plains Subdivision a model resettlement site in the country.

Iloilo City has been a recipient of Felicidad T. Sy Foundation projects. As a matter of fact, the foundation has funded and built five two-storey two classroom buildings here namely in Ticud Elementary School, Barrio Obrero Elementary School, A. Montes Elementary School, Inggore Elementary School and Nabitasan Elementary School.

The foundation has now built a total of 75 school building all over the Philippines.
